Ich habe die Kanadier von April Wine das erste (und bis dahin einzige) Mal 1981 auf der „Heavy Metal Rendez Vous“ Tour gesehen. Im Vorprogramm hatten sie Krokus dabei, die den Hauptact April Wine gnadenlos in Grund und Boden spielten. Damals hielt man die Hard Rocker aus Kanada und die Schweizer für ein gutes Live-Package. Später hätte man diese Kombination (in Europa) wahrscheinlich nicht mehr gewagt.
Von der „Drei-Gitarren-Armee“ der damaligen Zeit, ist heute bei April Wine nicht mehr sehr viel übrig. Sänger und Gitarrist Myles Goodwyn, der leider im Dezember 2023 verstarb, war der Kopf und Dreh- und Angelpunkt der Band.
Speziell von 1978 bis 1981 veröffentlichten April Wine drei hervorragende Hard Rock Alben: „First Glance„, „Harder Faster“ und „The Nature of the Beast„. Das musikalische Schaffen der Band begann allerdings bereits 1969.
An der Gitarre spielt heute immer noch Brian Greenway, am Bass Richard Lanthier (seit 2011), seit 2012 bedient Roy Nichol die Drums und der Gesang mit Gitarre Marc Parent, der (seit 2022) das jüngste Mitglied der Band ist.
Der Auftritt als Support von Uriah Heep im Bochumer RuhrCongress war amtlich, kam aber gegen den Opener Heavy Pettin nicht an.
I saw the Canadians from April Wine for the first (and until then only) time in 1981 on the “Heavy Metal Rendez Vous” tour. They had Krokus as the opening act, who mercilessly blew the main act, April Wine, out of the water. Back then, the hard rockers from Canada and Switzerland were considered a good live package. Later on, this combination would probably not have been attempted (in Europe).
Not much remains of April Wine’s “three-guitar army” of that era. Singer and guitarist Myles Goodwyn, who sadly passed away in December 2023, was the band’s mastermind and linchpin.
April Wine released three outstanding hard rock albums, particularly between 1978 and 1981: “First Glance,” “Harder Faster,” and “The Nature of the Beast.” However, the band’s musical career began as early as 1969.
Brian Greenway still plays guitar, Richard Lanthier has been on bass since 2011, Roy Nichol has been on drums since 2012, and Marc Parent, who is the youngest member of the band (since 2022), sings and plays guitar.
Their performance as support for Uriah Heep at the RuhrCongress in Bochum was official, but couldn’t compete with the opener Heavy Pettin.
