Ich muss gestehen, dass ich Ugly Kid Joe, als sie erfolgreich 1993 „Cats In The Cradle“ veröffentlichten und die Charts stürmten, irgendwie nie richtig einordnen konnte. Für Hard Rock zu weich, für Pop zu hart. „Rock“ traf es wohl am besten. Dass „Cats In The Cradle“ gar ein Cover von Harry Chapin war, habe ich erst viel später erfahren.
Ich habe die Band all die Jahrzehnte aus den Augen verloren und erst vor kurzem einige Live Videos gesehen, die mich aufhorchen ließen. Die Kalifornier sind ziemlich rockig, was mich dann dazu trieb, mir die Band auf der Louder Stage anzuschauen. Und tatsächlich: ich habe Ugly Kid Joe echt unrecht getan. Ein klasse Gig vor abertausenden begeisterter Fans.
I must admit that when Ugly Kid Joe released their hit “Cats In The Cradle” in 1993 and stormed the charts, I never really knew how to categorize them. Too soft for hard rock, too hard for pop. ‘Rock’ probably described them best. I only found out much later that “Cats In The Cradle” was actually a cover of Harry Chapin’s song.
I lost sight of the band for decades and only recently saw some live videos that caught my attention. The Californians are pretty rocking, which prompted me to check out the band on the Louder Stage. And sure enough, I had really done Ugly Kid Joe an injustice. A great gig in front of thousands of enthusiastic fans.
