Unter dem Banner „Clash Of The Titans“ gab es am 15. Mai ein „Familientreffen“ der besonderen Art. Drei ehemalige Bands des Labels Gama (in den Achtziger aktiv), inszenierten dieses fantastische Konzert im Kaminwerk Memmingen.
Gama hatte damals einen extrem schlechten Ruf, allerdings auch ein gewisses Gespür für hoffnungsvolle tolle Bands: Stormwitch, Sinner, Darkness und eben die bei „Clash Of The Titans“ auftretenden Bands Stranger, Tyrant und Gravestone waren bei der in Kirchheim Teck angesiedelten Firma unter Vertrag. Man kann auch nicht pauschal sagen, dass das Label keine Ihrer Bands supportete. Der Name Gama war verbrannte Erde und reichte alleine damals schon aus, dass die Bands stiefmütterlich von der Presse behandelt wurden.
Ich machte mir die Entscheidung wahrlich nicht leicht, an diesem einzigartigen Konzert teilzunehmen. Keine der drei Bands habe ich weder in den Achtzigern, noch in naher Vergangenheit live gesehen. Und darüber hinaus war es die letzte Möglichkeit, Gravestone auf der Bühne zu erleben. Also rein ins Auto und die 500 km Entfernung in Kauf genommen.
Als erste stiegen Stranger auf die Bühne, die damals trotz Knebelvertrag bei Gama Step by Step zu Chroming Rose mutierten. Dementsprechend interessant war denn auch die Setlist, die Songs „beider Bands“ enthielt. Zudem wirkten auch Musiker aus beiden Perioden mit, was das frenetische Publikum dankend mit jeder Menge Euphorie belohnte. Ein toller Einstieg in einen tollen Abend!!!
Under the banner “Clash Of The Titans,” a very special “reunion” took place on May 15. Three former bands from the Gama label (active in the 1980s) put on this fantastic concert at the Kaminwerk in Memmingen.
Gama had an extremely bad reputation back then, but it also had a knack for spotting promising, great bands: Stormwitch, Sinner, Darkness and the bands performing at “Clash Of The Titans”—Stranger, Tyrant, and Gravestone—were all signed to the Kirchheim Teck-based company. It’s also not fair to say that the label didn’t support any of its bands. The name Gama was a liability, and back then, that alone was enough to ensure the bands were neglected by the press.
I truly didn’t take the decision to attend this unique concert lightly. I hadn’t seen any of the three bands live, neither in the ’80s nor in the recent past. And on top of that, it was the last chance to see Gravestone on stage. So I hopped in the car and braced myself for the 500-kilometer drive.
Stranger were the first to take the stage; back then, despite a restrictive contract with Gama, they had gradually evolved into Chroming Rose. The setlist was accordingly interesting, featuring songs from “both bands.” Musicians from both eras also performed, which the frenetic audience gratefully rewarded with plenty of euphoria. A great start to a great evening!!!
